I have admired your peonys and visit your page now and then. Now when our floweringseason is over.
I have looked the label again and realised that Pivoine arborescente is the Italian-word for tree peony not Latin as I first tought.
I have had it for three years now. At first winter it freezed down but send new sprouts, got stepped on of a moose and yet bloomed with two flowers.
Last spring I covered it and it didn't freeze down. Now I had a real tree peony!
Still it grows very slowly and get flower only on top of the ground sprouts. It's thr most exotic plant I have and I'm very keen on it.
I have now plant a Rosa hugonis next to it so now there's a kind of Chinese part of the garden.Jaskahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02264528920634228647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13023676.post-1129882621260459242005-10-21T10:17:00.000+02:002005-10-21T10:17:00.000+02:00Hello Jaska. Anni Heino sent me your link. I have ...Hello Jaska.
Anni Heino sent me your link. I have seen your beautiful photograph.

Yes, you have the Paeonia ostii, which the Chinese call Feng Dan Bai (or "White Phoenix"). Sometimes it is written "Fen Dan Bai".

Lovely simple flowers. It is a strong grower, so you should have a good chance of growing it well, in Sweden.

If you want to explore more, on the WWW, go to Carsten Burkhardt's Peony web site. http://www.paeo.de/name/index.html

There is a searchable data base of nearly every Peony variety or species. The direct link for P. ostii is: http://www.paeo.de/navigation/name_oc.html

This species (or group of plants)is very variable, between individual plants. Always simple, and lovely. It may not be as elegant or spectacular as some of the fancier varieties, but it is a hardier plant (stronger, less disease, etc.).
